Japanese Title: Tandem Lover
Genre: Yuri Action Science Fiction
Length: 1 volume
Positives:
- Great attention to detail in the mechs. Every dial, every screw, detailed.
Negatives:
- Poor romantic timing.
- No character development or build-up.
Tandem Lover takes place in the near future at a mech piloting school. The slowest pilot in the school is paired with another girl for the final exam – both are on the verge of failing out of school. There’s also another story about two girls who bond over mech electronics and maintenance.
Sadly, even though I like the idea of a mech school, the stories are shallow. The characters don’t go anywhere and each event has a distinct lack of tension or drama. Is confessing your love in the middle of an exam necessary? It’s not as though they are about to die or anything – it’s an exam! A bit stupid really.
Art – High
Visuals reminiscent of Tin Tin. Love the mech detailing and cross-sections.
Story – Low
The characters don’t develop over the course of these shallow stories.
Recommendation: Don’t bother. Despite the nice art, Tandem Lover’s narrative is too flat.
